Ronners-- It's true that a wideangle can be a good tool for candids. A 20mm or wider lens can be pointed away from a subject, but still include him/her suruptitiously. Even a 24mm or 28mm can be useful, because you don't have to point the camera right at the subject.

However, I find the most useful tool for candids in a public situation is to act confident and ignore onlookers. If you just keep going about your business, people will begin to ignore you, no matter how "in-their-face" you are. Just look at reality TV. If people can adapt and ignore video cameras, lights and crew in their own home, the can certainly ignore a random photog on the street with a P&S or SLR.
