Photographer's Note

The very large Ksar Ouid Abdelhalim lies unloved on the outskirts of Rissani near the edge of the Sahara not far from Erge Chebbi. It used to be a grand royal palace but now just a few parts are still lived in. As we wandered about we came across one of the residents who claimed to a relative of the royal family. He was sitting in a very "rustic" part of the complex reached through maze like courtyards and living in poverty. Many of the courtyards were muddy (it is in an oasis) so you had to watch where you stepped. The place is in a very bad state of decay. It was an excuse for one of my favourite subjects - decay. There are glimpses of past glories in some of the remaining features such as this arch that leads to a door.

As always best in the large view.
