Photographer's Note

I was staying at a hostel outside a sleepy town north of Nelspruit and thought one day in Krger was enough. So the hostel recommended a river cruise in the Blyde River Canyon. The problem is: They didn't even know where the cruise started. They said "take the first bus to Graskop and you'll be sure to find a tour from there". The bus driver had no idea where to drop me off for the tour and eventually I found out the hostel had sent me 70 km from where I was supposed to be. What better to do than trying to make the best out of it?

Apparently there was a viewpoint and a scenic route about 10 km north of this town, so I decided to walk along the road to the viewpoint and back. And to my surprise it was a beautiful scenery around there! Ironically the road itself was much better than the viewpoint itself and in the end I was very happy with the day after all. I rarely feel more free than when I'm walking in unknown territories over a vast landscape like that.

The best moments of travel are not always encountered at the obvious places. The best memories usually come from what you do and what you feel rather than what you can see and what you can touch. I learned that lesson several times in Africa. Wrong can easily turn out right.
