Photographer's Note

A photo taken on the streets of Jinja, when the sun was low in the sky (hence the pale palette).

Bicycles are ubiquitous forms of transport in Uganda. They carry all sort of things; the bicycle in the forground is a type of taxi - the foam seat is for the passenger. It's a step down from the 'buda-buda' mopeds of Kampala and the wonderful mopeds in Cambodia but riding one is a great way to meet a Ugandan.

I used a combination of a slow shutter speed (1/30 I think in this shot), a little adjustment to the exposure (-ve 0.7) and a pan to try and get the effect. I wasn't aiming for focus on the bikes to be perfect - given the light I wanted more of an impression and concrete image. I was eating a rather fine chicken curry at the time!
