Photographer's Note

Lake Victoria empties into the Nile River at Jinja and the river begins its 4000 mile journey to the Mediterrean here. You can take a short boat ride that goes into the lake to see the changes in both the color and the movement of the water.

John Speke, an English explorer, was the first European to see the source of the Nile, when he arrived here in 1862 after crossing Lake Victoria coming from what is now Tanzania. There are quite a few monuments and plaques here celebrating Speke's "discovery."

Just upriver is the huge Owens Falls Dam, built in 1954, which supplies most of Uganda's and some of Kenya's electricity.
