Photographer's Note

Factual note:-

Mui Wo (literally means "plum nest") is a village on the southern coast of Lantau Island.

Mui Wo is located on Silver Mine Bay, so named for the silver mines that were once worked along the Silver River which flows though the village.

The history of Mui Wo is linked to the end of the Southern Song Dynasty in the late 1270s.

The nearby Sivermine Cave was mined for silver during the second half of the 19th century.

Nearby attractions include Silvermine Bay Beach, Silver Mine Waterfall and a temple dedicated to Man Mo, originally built during the reign of Wan Li, emperor of the Ming Dynasty.

Tech: Taken with an old instamatic camera in 1995. Scanned at 300dpi. Cloned out a lot of marks on the photo. Selected the sky and blurred it. Cropped, resized and sharpened.

Personal note:-

This photo is a favorite of mine, because it brings back fond memories of my year living in Mui Wo.

I spent my first seven months in Hong Kong, living in "a concrete jungle", before the noise, pollution and crowds got to me.

My photo today was taken outside the place that I moved to in Sliver Mine Bay. The ferry terminal was on the other side of the bay. So I either had a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute bicycle ride. The urban council complex (the white building in the middle) was half empty at weekends and so I had the gym and squash courts of myself.

Although the bay was busy on Saturdays and Sundays, with day visitors escaping the big city - it was very peaceful Monday to Friday. My fondest memory is of walking home along the beach in my bare feet

Most of my colleagues thought I was crazy to exchange a 5-minute walk to work, for a one and a half hour trip via bicycle, ferry and tram - but I thought it made perfect sense.

Then after one year in Mui Wo I moved back to the "concrete jungle", because my fiance 'convinced me' that it was more practical.
