Photographer's Note

"Riso Amaro" (bitter rice, riz amer), I had some scenes of old italian movies, De Santis, Rossellini, Visconti or De Sica, when I spotted this scene in Pondicherry's veggie market.
Partly due to the theatrical display of these two characters, another part due to the untamed look of the shopkeeper.

Btw, probably worth mentioning italian movie director Rossellini made a striking film about India in the late fifties. Lesser known is that Jean Vautrin, a french writer, was his assistant on the movie : from the 4 years he spent through India from 1952, he shot thousands of BW images, some of his best collected in a photo book titled "J'ai fait un beau voyage". (I had a nice trip)

A dream book illustrated by masterpieces of french writing and top notch Leica M photos. Highly recommended.
