The Karni mata temple or the rat temple is dedicated to Karni mata, a famous mystic of her times, believed to be an incarnation of goddess Durga. Karni mata was the 6th daughter of Mehoji charan and Deval devi born in the 14th century in a village of Jodhpur. She lived for 150 years and remained young and beautiful. During her lifetime she performed many miracles and led her whole life to help all the needy people.

Legend has it that Laxman, the son-in-law of Karni Mata (or the son of one of his storytellers), drowned in a pond at Kapi Sarovar, in the tehsil of Kolayat in Bikaner district, while he was trying to drink the water. Karni Mata then begs Yama, the god of death, to bring him back to life. Yama refuses at first, then he moderates his judgment and allows Laxman and the sons of Karni Mata to be reincarnated as rats. However, the legend of the rats varies according to the local folklore. According to another version, 20,000 soldiers would have deserted their ranks during a battle and would have rushed to Deshnoke. When they learn of their desertion, punishable by death, Karni Mata spares their lives but turns them into rats; it offers them the temple as a place to stay. The soldiers of the army express their gratitude towards Karni Mata and promise to serve her forever. Source : wiki
