This was taken on the premises of Tōshō-gū Shrine at Nikkō. After passing through the Yomei-mon ("Sun Blaze Gate"), one enters the Honden (main shrine). The famous gate can be seen at the right. I used a graduated filter to accentuate the sky.

Nikkō Tōshō-gū (日光東照宮) is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa line of shoguns in Japan. Initially built in 1617, during the Edo period, while Ieyasu's son Hidetada was shogun, it was enlarged during the time of the third shogun, Iemitsu. Tōshō-gū is part of the "Shrines and Temples of Nikko", a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ieyasu is enshrined here, and his remains are entombed here.

The lavishly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen Shinto and Buddhist buildings set in a beautiful forest. Initially a relatively simple mausoleum, Tōshō-gū was enlarged into the spectacular complex seen today by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu during the first half of the 17th century. Countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf were used to decorate the buildings in a way not seen elsewhere in Japan, where simplicity has been traditionally stressed in shrine architecture.

Nikkō is located around 120 kilometers north of Tokyo, and can easily be reached by train. For visiting Nikkō's sights, it is useful to buy a combination ticket which includes admission to Toshogu, Rinnoji, Taiyuinbyo and Futarasan Shrines. This combination ticket is 1000 Yen (6.70 Euros).

Hello Norbert,
I am always happy to see pictures of Nikko, a place which is difficult to reach, but which is certainly worth to visit. Your picture reminds me many sweet memories.
My son came back from Japan a couple of weeks ago,and the first thing he did was to get married. How about you ?

Hi, friend!
I see interesting asian architecture. I never been in Japan. For me it is exotic photo. Interesting composition.

Bonjour Norbert,

Very best regards.
Daniel.

Hi Norbert,
another good wide-angle compo and the
most informative note!
Btw, how do you manage to remember all
these Japanese names?
Excellent light management and colours,
fine details and filled frame... the only
thing that bothers me here is a quite harsh
change in foliage colour on top of the trees
due to your use of a graduated filter (or is
it a case of that area being shaded by a cloud
at that very moment?).
Cheers,
Robi

Great shot, with lots of subtle details that make it work so well. The use of the graduated ND filter is an example: it really brings out the sky, but I never would have known if you hadn't mentioned it. Nice lighting and the presence of the people really gives this some scale and social context. Well done!

Great architectural shot, Norbert.
I like how the gate's roof towers over the people. Its dark rich colours contrast nicely with the bright blue sky and the sunlight seems to be focused on the people.
Well framed.

Most interesting place Norbert. Impressive buildings in the traditional style captured well in this compo. The filter gives a shadowed effect in the top of the trees but do not disturbe the impression of the place. In overall a well disposed compo.

Hi Norbert,
A temple area within the greens, this image makes me think to Kamakura which was quite similar. Which of both places did you prefer ?
The view is pleasant with a nice sky, a bit cold as it seems. It's not easy to render well these wooden gates, but you achieved a good result imho finally it's busy thanks to the numerous people in the frame.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi, Norbert. You show us typically Japanese architecture in a beautiful natural surrounding. I like how the constructions seem to blend in with their natural environment. The people bring different tones in the picture whose colours are very good.

Delightful comp and PoV, though I do find it a bit overexposed
