Photographer's Note

A strong Hmong woman at work in a small clothing factory in Ha Giang province. Here the cloth is died, using only natural ingredients, obviously. They make clothes for the people of the village and for the occasional traveller stopping by.

I have no idea what the name of this little village is, so this is another shot I'll just post under "Ha Giang" (province). I do feel a bit guilty about that.

About the title...

"Died in the wool" would have bee my original title for this shot, sneakily getting a song title reference in to please those members who missed them. Then again, it would not have been right. The clothing here is mostly made from hemp, not wool. So...

Hemp is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. It is one of the fastest growing plants and was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber 10,000 years ago. It can be refined into a variety of commercial items, including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.

Hemp (or cannabis) can, of course, be used for other purposes too, which is why it is frowned upon in many other parts of the world.
