Photographer's Note

After a day of walking around the historic old town in Tallinn, we were saturated with the great examples of architecture. As we started to head back to the port to catch our ferry back to Helsinki, we were surprised to find a low concrete pyramid along the coast, very Soviet in its appearance. We discovered that it was the Linnahall, built for the 1980 Olympic games (the sailing events took place in Tallinn harbor).

The low structure reminded me very much of a ziggurat, with staircases running up and down the front and back at different angles. The seaward side especially had a number of passages, almost mazelike.

It was impossible to get one photo that showed all of Linnahall, as it's rather low and wide. This photo is a detail of one of the staircases on the seaward side, and with it I captured one of the clouds colored by the coming sunset.
