Photographer's Note

The Hassan Yakovali mosque is the only Turkish church in P馗s (Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010!) which remained intact in its entirety, even the minaret is still there beside the mosque.

The building used to stand outside the city, near the Szigeti gate, and a dervish monastery also belonged to it, which is mentioned in the travelogue of the Turkish globe-trotter Evlia Celebi. A small community was formed around the mosque, which became the centre of Hungarian Islam.

Students used to come here from distant places to educate themselves in the highschool, its monastery secured accommodation for pilgrims of far away countries. After the expulsion of the Turks the appearance of the mosque remained intact, because only its interior was converted into a Christian church.

Restoration was finished in 1961. Nowadays the djami is opened on Friday prayers and Ramadan, other days it is used as a museum.

I hope you like the minimalist compo and the special building itself (original Ottoman mosque) in a special location (in the heart of Europe). Visit the other photos of mine on TE about mosques of Hungary/West/Baranya.
