Photographer's Note

Photo taken today at about 10am showing the eruption in Grmsvtn volcano, situated in eastern Iceland beneath the Vatnajkull glacier. The photo was taken from a small 2-engine aircraft at about 300m over the volcano.
There were some explosions and ash clouds, but the activity has diminished substantially since it started at about 10PM on november 1エst (monday).

The ash column reached 14km at most and travelled all the way to Finland and also disrupted air traffic over Sweden. The jkulhlaup (flood water from the melted glacier) had already reached its maximum yesterday, and the water will not destroy roads on the south coast as it did in 1996. The flood water issues from a lake beneath the glacier that form when the heat melts the ice.
