Chiesa di Santa Maria della Lode a Vescovo - Torri in Sabina RietirnAlso known by the names of "Cathedral of Sabina" and "Santa Maria in Vescovo", it stands on the plain where the ancient Roman city of Forum Novum once stood. Forum Novum was the seat of a documented diocese as far back as 465, so it is probable that an early Christian church had been located there since then. An early Christian phase in Santa Maria is however not documented by any source nor much less identified by archaeological excavations, one can guess its existence from some elements of the facade, the crypt and the transept. The construction of the current building began in the eighth century; the transept would belong to this phase, as evidenced by the fragments of frescoes, while the semi-annular crypt, the facade and the apse date back to the 9th century.rnYou enter the courtyard in front of the complex through a sort of prothyrum dating back to the XII century, you read the writing: ECCLESIA CATHEDRALIS SABINORUM.r
