Roothuus Basel

In my previous photo, the Basel Town Hall (Rathaus Basel) could already be seen in the reflections. It is an iconic building, which stands out in the city by its colourful fa軋de, as you can see here. The Town Hall is located at Marktplatz in the heart of the city and was built 500 years ago. It is called Roothuus in local Basel dialect, which is a pun, because it doesn稚 only mean 祖ouncil house�, but also sounds like 喪ed house�.

Hello Lars, I remember well this attractive red City Hall in Basel. But what a shame with these works in the foreground. Maybe to cut it off would be the better option. On the other hand, the pattern in the pavement is interesting.

Jag tror det var Monty Python som hade en annan vits om ett Rathaus och visade ett hus fullt av r蚯tor. Det var inte v舐ldens vackraste fgrund h舐, men det 舐 ju ett ovanligt praktfullt r蘚hus. Vilken fantastisk f舐g och vilka fina detaljer. Du hade god hj舁p av ett perfekt ljus som ger byggnaden en s� underbart m舩tad ton.

A bit pity about the construction site, because this is one of the most beautiful buildings in Basel.
(I posted a picture of its hall and staircase long ago).
Anyway, still the picture offers wonderful view of the fa軋de.

Hoe dan ook roodhuis of welke naam men het ook mag geven, het is echt heel mooi.
Om dit te mogen restaureren is een hele eer.
Ik heb ook op mijn actief, mooie projecten maar dit is meer dan super.
Zover ben ik niet gekomen.
Heel mooie en scherpe foto, prachtwerk niettegenstaande de heras hekkens en het bouwpuin. Bedankt.

Hello Lars, a beautiful building and so distinctive with its' red colour. The decoration on the walls and around the windows is very special. Plus the lovely pattern of tiles on the roof.
A pity about the railings and building materials, but work must go on, and you have managed to include the lovely pattern of the paving to balance the shot.
The top of the tower is wonderful.

The safety fences and work in progress detritus and materials look exactly like my local shopping centre which has been doing renovations for months. I like the fg floral tile pattern and the impressive red tower of the town hall building. Tfs!

Lars, it is a remarkable red building including a tower. The facade is adorned with frescos, the roof has an aesthetic painting with spots. A safety barrier placed at its feet prevent from seeing its base. Fine colors, good image quality, instructive photo note, regards.

Hallo Lars,
Wel een heel gedurfde kleur voor dit Zwitserse stadhuis.
Slechte planning van de werkzaamheden. Wisten ze niet dat je kwam?
Maar je had wel geluk wat de kleur van de lucht betreft. De toren van het Roothuus kan niet naar een mooiere lucht wijzen om een kleurcontrast te bekomen.

curious the red building. the name of the city halls in germany even put a smile in my mouth, in my poor english it sounds like (house of the rats).
amazing details like these murals we can identify at distance. a compo well done. a pity the works in progress in that moment.

Hi Lars,
Unusual colour of this Town Hall makes it unforgettable. Quite spectacular building. And if I remember right you need a wide angle lens to fit it in the frame. There's nothing you could do to the fence. I wonder if that flower pattern on the pavement was just laid out.

Hello Lars,

This is a stunning building and one which, I am sure, everyone feels a need to photograph.
You were brave to attempt it whilst there is so much scaffolding across its facade but, there is doubt that you have shown what a remarkable building this is!
Apart from its colour, the murals, the shaped windows, the balconies, the sculptures, the clock and the patterned roof are all well captured in your photograph.

Hello Lars,

You have, as always, written a fascinating and informative note and given us a beautiful photograph to admire.

And, by Jove, this building definitely is RED, a feature which is no doubt enhanced by the bright sunlight and the deep blue sky above.

I suspect that you were limited for space here and had to set your camera to its shortest focal length and also tilt it a little backwards to accommodate the whole building in the frame - that, I think, is why the verticals appear to converge so much and the building has a slight appearance of falling backwards. But that is not at all disconcerting - and neither are the building works in front of the building either - these are features about which you could have done nothing.

The light is glorious, the colours rich yet true, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness exquisite.

this color goes so well with your recent Oregon photos :)
Very intense tone they have chosen which makes it quite characteristic.
Beautiful town hall and great presentation in fantastic light.
Of course the construction work in the foreground is quite annoying but it made me smile: I suppose that is part of life and travel photos will always have elements like this.

Ook Basel schijnt nu een ontmoedigingsbeleid voor toeristen te hebben ingesteld. Een bouwhek tot een meter of twee hoog. Als dat niet helpt zullen ze waarschijnlijk het hele Roothaus aan het zicht onttrekken. Gelukkig hebben ze geen invloed op het mooie weer.

I don't think they used a strong enough paint colour hahaha, it doesn't attract enough attention yet :) This one is bold and beautiful. love the upclose shot and the UP pov to really make it pop. Of course, having the blue sky and bright light helps so much too. its a good one, even with all the construction stuff going on in the fg. cheers

No wonder that this building stands out in the city, the striking red color is seen from afar, but it is a very beautiful building, with a lot of decoration on its facade and a nice roof. Its windows and balconies are also remarkable.
A good management, both of the luminosity, as of the sharpness.
