Photographer's Note

The "Cannon" this is a single gun placement it is one of a number of guns which would constitute a "Battery".
An early Artillery piece mounted upon a carriage or mounting that fired heavy lead or metal balls usually had a crew of 6-8 to operate it unlike artillery weapons of today its capabilities and trajectory were poor this one dates probaly from around the late or mid 1600s, possability a 4.5 pounder. would have seen service around the cromwellian period I imagine when the island defences were improved.
