Photographer's Note

I love the sight of Turkish minarets that look like sharpened pencils. So, while we were waiting for the ferry boat, I could not help taking a few shots of the minarets of Yeni Cami (New Mosque). The construction of this mosque began in 1597 upon the order of Sultana Safiye, the wife of Sultan Murad III and later Valide Sultan (Queen Mother) of Sultan Mehmed III. She ordered the mosque in her capacity as Valide Sultan, two years after Mehmed III's ascension to the Ottoman throne in 1595, hence the mosque窶冱 formal name 窶儂ew Valide Sultan Mosque窶, which was abbreviated to 窶儂ew Mosque.窶
