Photographer's Note

I remain in Hama in north-central Syria in September 1995. On my second day in the city one of the places I visited was the covered bazaar. The light was not always easy to handle among the partly very dark stalls, but I managed a few photos and you can see three of them today.

There is very little to say about these photos. The main one just shows a boy selling candy apples apples covered in a sugar candy coating with a wooden stick inserted as a handle. A totally crazy way to destroy a good fruit, if you ask me. But children obviously like them. The other boy is holding two of them while his sister seems to be looking for the money.

The photo is slightly cropped to get rid of "disturbing persons" on the left side.

Here is a larger version.

Two more photos in the WS, one from the clothes market, the other from a mixed market just outside the building.

All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
