Photographer's Note

I treated my wife to all sorts of stuff on Valentine's Day last Saturday.

Not only did we go out for breakfast, but on the way to her Acupuncture, I stopped by Seafood City, an Asian market in University City. She had never been there before, so I thought it might be a unique experience for her. I go there at least a few times a year to buy shrimp, as they have the best deal going in St. Louis if you need a bucket load. Or some live frogs, still-swimming buffalo carp, bass and a plethora of other fresh and frozen delights.

You might imagine that the ambiance here is a little different than a white-bread suburban St. Louis County girl is used to... It never bothers me, I find it fascinatingly similar to real Asian markets in places like, well, Asia. I was a sailor for twenty years, so I got around a bit.

Linda's a trooper, though, and she has done her own traveling, so it wasn't as traumatic as I might have hoped. She even bought some stuff and didn't retch when I told her she had eaten several pounds of shrimp from this place, which is awesome. I want to come back for shrimp again!

So here's a shot of a customer getting some fish cut up by the attendants behind the fresh fish counter. Every time I pulled the camera up, those guys all turned their backs. Some of the customers were a little leery of me, as well. Probably because I'm not the best lookin' white guy around. Maybe they thought I was strange for wanting to take pictures in such an everyday place...

They do have some beautiful fish. You can get just the eyeballs and heads, too, if you want... They are in a box just the other side of the lady. Just fill a bag and get the attendant to weigh it and label it and check out at front!

Have a great weekend!
