The People Mover

The centre of Detroit has a remarkable public transport facility called the 撤eople Mover.
A single track light rail system, opened in 1987 with a length of 4.73 km. One round is completed in 13 minutes and 35 seconds. and passes through 13 stations. Eight of them have been integrated into existing buildings.
Initially the wagons drove the route counter clockwise, but since 2008 clockwise, although it can run in either direction when necessary.
Despite the low rate of $ 0.75 per ride, the people mover is not very popular. Every year, 2,000,000 travellers use the People Mover, which has however a capacity of 15,000,000 passengers annual.

In 1966, Congress decided to establish the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). This authority was instructed to develop new types of transit. After the failure to produce any large-scale results and increased pressure to show results, UMTA created the Downtown People Mover Program (DPM) in 1975. Initially, 35 cities showed interest in the DPM project, but in the end it was only realized in two places: Detroit and Miami.
