Photographer's Note

This was taken near New Hope, Bucks County, PA USA
This was the only view possible for me to take this photograph. I took this with a 100 mm f2 lens. I could have played around but it was raining. I will try to go back and take some more photos.

Van Sant Bridge is also known as Beaver Dam Bridge
Pennsylvania was said to have 1500 covered bridges at one time. Timothy Palmer built the first American covered bridge over the Schuylkill River at 30th Street in Philadelphia in 1800. The investors asked to have it covered in the hopes of extending the life of the bridge Palmer reluctantly agreed. The value of the covered design was quickly recognized. The true reason for covering bridges was to extend the life of the bridge by protecting the side supporting timbers (not necessarily the floorboards) from exposure to the weather, thus lowering maintenance costs of the bridge.
