Photographer's Note

The steam plume is where lava from Pu'u'O'o crater enters the sea through a lava tube. The plume contains aerosol droplets of hydrochloric acid formed when hot lava reacts with chloride salts from the sea. The foreground is pahoehoe lava from previous flows.
