Red Scar Knoll

This is the last impression from the wonderful landscape of the Painted Hills in Central Oregon. After our visit we returned to the highway and continued our way to our hotel in the town of John Day and would leave Oregon the following day and enter a new state. But before I am going to make that state yellow on my U.S.A. map, I値l pause my current series. I am about halfway now, so a good moment to share some pictures from a trip I took two weeks ago.

The Painted Hills are one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and famous for the colourful layers of the hills, which were formed in different geological eras. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. This particular hill is called Red Scar Knoll.

Hallo Lars,
Dit is een spectaculaire!
Op het miniatuurbeeld meende ik een rode piramide te zien opduiken in het landschap.
De berg heeft een prachtige vorm, een kegel zoals een vulkaan.
Bovendien is zijn rode kleur heel wat vuriger dan die op de hellingen van de heuvels links vooraan.
Mooi met het zicht op de beboste heuvel helemaal achteraan.

Hi Lars,

The landform on the right resembles the red pyramid of Egypt. Good sharpness and natural looking colour and saturation. The overlapping spurs add depth and layering to the composition. Tfs!

You did well with Portland and now with the painted hills. These are rich with year round colors, no fall seasonal effect, just wonderful eons of color. Not sure if you have to walk into these spots of they are roadside turnouts with distant views. In any case you have picked for us some beautiful samples of geological natural colorations - thank you. David

Jag tycker fortfarande att dessa rostra kullar ser ut som gruvavfall som tippats av h舐 fr蚣 lastbilar. ;-) Jag 舐 inte van vid att se s蘚ana f舐ger i naturen, s� d舐f tycker jag det ser s� konstigt ut. Men onekligen 舐 det vackert och ansl蘰nde, och detta 舐 dessutom en v舁 balanserad bild och som vanligt tekniskt perfekt.

Hello Lars, the variety of colour is wonderful, very evident in this shot. We can enjoy the weathered shapes, and this conical 'hill' makes a good focal point for your composition.

this is amazing! I love places like this and that is why American Southwest is my favourite place ever. Here again I learned that it is not necessarily Southwest because also the Northwest is amazing...

Hi Lars,
I think this is the image that I like most about the wonders of this Park, the pyramidal mountain is great in the background in that almost garnet red, while in the foreground we have this elevation with yellowish stripes and a softer red, the thin nuanced grass set.
An image to enjoy, with its beautiful color, great luminosity and perfect sharpness.

one thing you haven't mentioned (at least I don't think you have), is how you got around here. Is it allowed to simply walk up these painted hills or is it not allowed and its blocked off? Just curious. smart compo here with the triangular top placed in that higher spot in the frame, its a comp that suits the eye so well. love it. cheers

Het lijkt welk of het rood van de Red Scar Knoll ook gebruikt is voor het Roothuus in Basel.
Interessant om de kleuren van de painted hills zo te bekijken.

I am glad that you had opportunity to visit Painted Hills. They are one of seven wonder of Oregon State. They are beautiful but I also recommend to visit painted mountains in Peru. They are amazing.
