Photographer's Note

Through half-closed eyes, for the light would otherwise be overpowering, I consider the tree, the lonely cloud, the sandstone bedrock of this part of the world and pray - in my fashion - for the vision of truth. I listen for signals from the sun - but that distant music is too high and pure for the human ear. I gaze at the three and receive no response. I scrap my bare feet against the sand and rock and am comforted by their solidarity and resistance. I look at the cloud. (From: Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire. Picture taken in Joshua Tree National Park, California.)

The trunk was lighted by silver side of my Fotoflex LiteDisc since the contrast was too high even for human eyes. Scanned by Nikon CoolScan IV-ED. Three masks were prepared (using combination of hand brush mask around the tree crown and Magic Wand elsewhere and feathered outside - into the sky - 10 pix at 4.000 pix width): sky, tree trunk including dominant branches, and rock; then saved to mask channels; resampled to 650 pix width; using Load Channels and mask sum and difference the rock was slightly darkened using curves, the trunk was made lighter and a bit more contrast since my LiteDisc was actually too small (I always take it with me in the desert for taking pictures of plant life and other small objects); the rock and the trunk were sharpened using unsharp mask 50%, radius 2 pix; the tree crown was manually sharpened by unsharp mask brush.
