Shot at the monthly autocross run by the local Porsche owners club. This takes place at the old Alameda Naval Air Station. You don't have to be a club member - just bring your Porsche and drop on by. It wasn't crowded the day we were there and the drivers were able to make several runs.

The tarmac area around the old hangars and adjacent to the seaplane basin (seen here between the cars and the navy ship in the background) is huge, and different clubs and the like can sign up to use it for their activities. For example, remote control aircraft (VERY large planes, jets and helicopters) have the field one day a month (the jets are extremely cool and interesting to watch), and there is a huge antiques fair here on the first Sunday of each month (come early!). Hubby and I often come out to the NAS on a weekend just to see what's happening - there is always something going on.

The NAS is a good example, I think, of putting an old federal base to good public use. It is a unique area, and Alameda seems to have been generous in making the various facilities available to its citizenry. The hangars themselves contain a wide variety of businesses, including our personal favorite -- a distillery, which makes wonderful flavored vodkas (Hangar One brand) and single malt whiskeys (St. George brand). There is also a winery, Rosenblum, right outside the base gates (they make wonderful zinfandels). Is this a great city to live in or what?
