Photographer's Note

May 21: Glacier Bay National Park

While we were milling about Grand Pacific and Margerie Glaciers, I noticed several flocks of birds flying close to the surface of the water. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I was able to track this flock and get a clear image. To the best of my internet research, these are white-winged scoters. While they look graceful in the air, their water landings look clumsy (see upper two frames of the workshop collage). Their take-off from the water reminded me of airplanes taking off (the lower two frames of the workshop collage follow a bird taking off).

The white-winged scoter (Melanitta deglandi) is a large sea duck. The genus name is derived from Ancient Greek melas "black" and netta "duck". The species name commemorates French ornithologist Cme Damien Degland. The white-winged scoter breeds over the far north of North America. It winters further south in temperate zones, on the Great Lakes, the coasts of the northern United States and the southern coasts of Canada. It has occurred as a vagrant in Europe, including Scotland, Iceland, Norway and Ireland. (From Wikipedia)

The workshop for this entry includes:
Ungraceful Landings / Graceful Take-off: Top two frames have captured ungraceful landings of two birds. The lower two frames have captured the graceful take off of one bird in sequence, from left to right.

İsko轌a, İzlanda, Norve ve İrlanda da dahil olmak zere Avrupa'da bir g軻be olarak ortaya ıkmıştır. (Vikipedi壇en)
