Tees Barrage & Whitewater Course (5 photos)
by Mark Sedgwick Gold Star Critiquer/Silver Workshop Editor/Silver Note Writer [C: W: 10 N: 25] (280)

The Barrage was created to stop tidal pollution coming upstream and polluting the river water further up. It acts like a dam that can be opened and closed to keep a constant water level above the barrage for leisure use, and also help alleviate flooding upstream. A nice side-effect was the creation of the Whitewater Course for kayakers. The water is diverted via the course around the barrage which creates man-made rapids for the kayakers to paddle.
