Photographer's Note
It may appear that this young market vendor is purposefully posing, but she was really just being natural. At the same time, African subjects are rarely this comfortable in front of a camera. So, Maybe she has a future on the catwalks of Milan, Paris, and NY? Of course, it's a long way from Lubumbashi...
Her wares hang in the background - jeans and shirts. They add a nice color.

Hi David
Let me start this right. I am NOT a people photographer, and generally uncomfortable in commenting. This does not mean I do not know what is required, just that I prefer other subjects. If someone placed a Camera body in my hands and says Here, go, shot, I would also do it.
As to this picture, and all pictures of darked skinned people, you must gernerally underexpose by 1/2 to 1 ful sotp! to compensate for the skin colour. Remember that your light meter wnats everything to look like 18% grey, so you must fool it into giving you the right exposure. 2nd. Always focus on the eyes, not the mose or the teeth, and shoot at f8. You can not go wrong in most instances when you shoot f8. Use fill flash, but prefably off camera, because of red-eye. If you want to use a converter, know that most sjort lenses cannot be coupled to a converter, as the glass protrude at the back. Only longer, tele lenses can be coupled to a converter. I use 2x ans 1.4 times 99% in all shooting circumstances, and no problem. Just remember, you must start with a fast lens, like a f2.8!

Yes, the background is at the same time unobtrusive and diverse enough to add color to a shot that was already perfect, thansk to her smile! A favorite, for sure!

Excellent portrait. I like the smile of this girl.
The DOF is perfect. Is it some money in her right hand? Did you give her something to make this photo?
Well done David.

lovely capture of natural happy expression. May not be technically perfect, but in real life (as opposed to studio shots) it is impossible to get everything right (without ruining the moment). Perhaps a little underexposure and fill-flash would have helped a in this situation. I wonder if this photo might work better in Black & White?

Beautiful photograph, the innocence is just lovely.
I recently finished reading a booked called Desert Rose - an autobiography by Waris Dirie, a previous desert nomad from Somalia, who eventually became a supermodel based in the UK (I think). I would recommend the book to everyone, it is very enlightening on life in Africa for young girls.

David
I love this shot
The colours in the background are stunning - they make me think of the Caribbean Sea.
And yes, stunning girl and clearly comfortable in front of the camera - maybe a future in modelling on the cards :)
Nicely taken.
