Disciplined Design, a photo from Khomas, South

Photographer's Note

A shot taken in Windhoek痴 main street � Independence Avenue (formerly Kaiser Wilhelm Strasse) . Built in the early 60痴 this was one of the first modern buildings to encroach upon what had been a small slice of Germany, architecturally speaking. The distinctive blue, orange and white facade has always appealed to me especially when the light adds good contrast and shadows.

Hello Rosemary,
I would have to see the whole building to judge whether I find it attractive. For now I am satisfied to admit that you have used the lines, colours and shadows very well for an interesting and attractive composition. The very elegantly curving diagonal of the lamp-post is that odd element, breaking the pattern, that many compositions need.

Rosemary, a couple of interesting choices in this shot - first, not looking straight-on; this works great, giving us more detail in the window wells and just adding more geometric interest. Second, including the lamp post. Certainly it adds visual interest; I'd like to see this same image without the post! Great exposure and wonderful sharpness. Thanks.

Hello Rosemary,

Do I detect a change in your subject matter of late? Not quite so many of the wonderful Namibian landscapes with the red dunes, saltpans, trees which have died of thirst and also fabulous pictures of the people: but rather a leaning toward the more "graphic" images?

This picture not only shows disciplined design but also disciplined photography. The image was well seen and well taken too with excellent composition to which the curving lamp standard adds no small part. The colours are wonderfully vibrant yet true, the lighting is superb, your exposure is spot-on and your new small camera has certainly come up trumps with amazing details and clarity.

Disciplined, and then that pesky streetlight has to come along and go against the grain... really nice use of geometry here to produce an interesting shot. I can see why the facade appeals to you; not only the strong lines but also a lot of interesting opportunity for shadows and contrast. Thanks!

Hello Rosemary,
You have framed the shot well to extract the most from the graphical lines offered by the architecture. I also like the inclusion of the lamp with its contrasting curved shape. The image is well lit and has very good colours and sharpness.

Namibia certainly can't deny its german past in this picture. Wouldn't it be for your note I would have placed this one somewhere in a small german town. The only give away maybe would be the so pleasing african light that would be hard to come by in Germany.
The tight framing enhances the details of the architecture beautifully.
Am I only imagine this or have you changed your photographic style lately. I still enjoy your very good photos very much but I have loved all your gorgeous Namibian desert scenes,

There is no need to study the building details here, the composition itself is very enjoyable, like a non-figurative painting. Lines and colours in a very pleasant harmony.

Good sharpness and effective tight framing in this superb cityscape, although I do prefer the red sand deserts of Namibia. I like the alternating vertical stripes of red and blue in the bricks & window shutters. Tfs and have a great Sunday.

itｴs a nice change from beautiful Namibian landscapes youｴve presented to us lately.This one is superb.I mean both,the facade of the building as well as your presentation of it.It looks great in such tight frame and well selected close-up.For an architecture fan like me itｴs a pleasure to admire so amazing patterns created by the red bricks and window blinds.
