Independence Memorial Museum, a photo from Khomas, South

Photographer's Note

Following on from my previous upload here is a wider view of the new museum. If you look between the legs of the structure you can just make out a couple of palm trees and a white crenelated wall, this is the Alte Feste. It is the oldest building of the city, built in 1892 as protection for new settlers as well as the Schutztruppe. For more information about the Independence Memorial Museum please see my last post

hi Rosemary,
Thanks for posting this version of the building too, its great to see it in colour. Amazing how it is built on those huge legs, seems a strange way to support such a huge structure! It is a lot more appealing in colour, but it is still quite a monolithic design. Is there any plans for this place to open soon? I would imagine it will look a lot more appealing when the barbed wire is taken down.

I must say,that the color version changes completely perception of this scene.Your previous,B&W shot had more "gloomy" look.This one full of bright,vivid colors looks more "pleasant"(even despite the barbed wires in the FG).

Hello Rosemary,
This point of view sets the new building in context. The architecture is rather innovative but it seems totally out of place in these surroundings. The golden tones look very attractive against the saturated blue sky.

Anche questo � un ottimo scatto, sempre perfetto nella tecnica, come d'altronde ci hai abituato, per�. a mio parere, il bianco e nero si addice meglio a questo tipo di architettura.
In ogni caso complimenti per l'ottima realizzazione.

another intriguing shot of this controversial memorial. This makes it look so different to your B&W study, I have to say it is an impressive size and quite an imaginative design. Your POV captures a striking light on the surfaces and set against a deep blue sky it looks beautifully modern and elegant.

A stark contrast between the utilitarian barbed wire topped fences and the artistic and inspiring bg monument. Good sharpness and superb graphism against the deep blue sky. I like the distortion from the wide angled lens. I may have cropped a little at right so that the lamp post begins exactly in the corner. Tfs!

Fascinating subject this I would have been so annoyed to see the fence because I would want to get closer to try different angles and POVs. I prefer this colour shot to the BnW you posted of it because it contrasts so well with the blue sky.

Hello Rosemary,

Well, this is a different view of this place, taken (I think) around the same time as your last one but in colour and with less contrast - and of, course, a wider view.

I got the distinct impression from your last picture that it was simply of the front and main entrance of this building but now I see that it was of pretty much the entire structure. While it looks big, it doesn't look that big and certainly doesn't look like 3 billion Namibian dollars' worth! In fact, it reminds me a bit of either a water tower or a gasometer.

But your picture is lovely with some delightful reflections off the bronze coloured cladding of the building which is beautifully portrayed against a clear deep blue sky. The lampposts are well placed in the frame but the rather haphazard fencing doesn't do a lot to enhance the picture. In fact, is there not a little gap in the fence at the left that a keen, nimble and resourceful photographer might be able to slip through when no-one was looking? :o)

A technically perfect picture with wonderful strong and vibrant colours, lovely light and exquisite details and sharpness.

Now this perspective comes as a real surprise, I would never have imagined the building to look like this from your last upload.
Despite the barbed wire it is a very attractive and impressing building, very futuristic.
Still it is not right to contract foreigners for such a commission when the local population is so in dire need of work.

Hi Rosemary,
Quite impressive on a rather weird way. Great architecture often stands out from the neighbourhood. But so does the worst. I think this will always split opinions and I have a feeling that those in favour will not be in majority. Barbed wire adds extra touch to this impression.

Rosemary, this shot makes the building look even stranger than it did in the previous image, kind of like a tin can being held in the air. Nice POV here showing us the fencing as well as lots of detail in the building itself. A strange-looking place, still, but a nice rendition.

A nice companion to your last shot, Rosemary, retaining the strong examination of this bit of architecture wile still underlining its controversial nature with the fence and now the symbol of colonization behind it. Maybe a thematic link there...

I'll certainly admit that this shot casts the building itself in a more favorable light (literally), and I love the sunburst reflected off the leg. A skillful capture.

its great to be back on TE again after a short 1 month absence :)

wonderful subject, wonderful story to read, but not really wonderful if you know what I mean.

excellent work in presenting this unopened Museum built by the N Koreans in Namibia. I certainly won't go on political rampage here on TE, but no doubt the way this was handled was completely wrong on many levels.

Hmmm not sure I like this type of architecture, it looks like a modern grain silo. But your photo of it is very artistic, with lovely colours and contrasts. The distortion created by the wide angle lens is very artistic. Nice work.
