A boarded window in one of the abandoned buildings in Fort St George, Chennai
Fort St. George is the name of the first English fortress in India, founded in 1644 at the coastal city of Madras, the modern city of Chennai. The construction of the fort provided the impetus for further settlements and trading activity, in what was originally an uninhabited land.
The East India Company, which had entered India around 1600 for trading activities, had begun licensed trading at Surat, which was its initial bastion. However, to secure its trade lines and commercial interests in the spice trade, it felt the necessity of a port closer to the Malaccan Straits, and succeeded in purchasing a piece of coastal land, originally called Chennirayarpattinam or Channapatnam, from a Vijayanagar chieftain named Damerla Chennappa Nayaka based in Chandragiri, where the Company began the construction of a harbour and a fort.
The fort was completed on 23 April 1644, coinciding with St. George's Day, celebrated in honour of the patron saint of England. The fort, hence christened Fort St. George, faced the sea and some fishing villages, and it soon became the hub of merchant activity. It gave birth to a new settlement area called George Town (historically referred to as Black Town), which grew to envelop the villages and led to the formation of the city of Madras. It also helped to establish English influence over the Carnatic and to keep the kings of Arcot and Srirangapatna, as well as the French forces based at Pondicherry, at bay.

Bonjour, cher Stephen,
Cette pr駸entation particuli鑽e est belle elle seule, elle exprime un type de construction . Cette forteresse poss鐡e encore des stigmates du pass. Les pigeons semblent vouloir occuper les lieux.

Hello Stephen,
A great example of the beauty of ugliness. The rich colors, the simple composition gives the picture the grandeur of a modern expressionistic painting.
An also a work with historical importance.
Well done.

Hi Stephen,
The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details of the house needing repairs. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Stephen
I don't know why it is, but abandonment and decay are so much more photogenic than smartness and polish. This is a beautiful little frame of colour, showing the passage of time and its ravages. Nice one.

Hello Stephen,
A good study in the different textures and colours exhibited by the weathered and crumbling wall with the partly exposed red bricks. Excellent sharpness and tight framing. Tfs!

Hi Stephen
oh yeah! this is exactly what I like haha
such a strange looking set up with the boarded up window but with the shutters closed behind it. Guess they really don't want anyone to get in. Thats too bad too, because I want to see whats behind that wall :)
love the grit and harsh wall conditions, awesome
cheers

Ciao Stephen
un luogo che andrebbe sicuramente rimesso a posto e curato, ma che funziona benissimo fotograficamente.
Molte le sfumature di colore, le macchie i mattoni.
Ottimo colpo d'occhio.
Buon we

Hello Stephen,
Such an old, abandoned house offers so many wonderful details and a great variety of colours and textures. I particularly like the patches of brickwork seen through the worn off plasterwork. The yellow parts are very eye-catching too.

Hi Stephen,
The all seeing eyes for places which are otherwise not noticed. Well composed shot. The prominent yellow is beautiful with the red bricks. The window must have been witnessed some stories on the other side! Bravo.
Best Regards,
Vishal.

Hello Stephen,
In my youth when I painted, I would have loved to capture the colors and textures on this ancient wall. Your note informs an very photo of Fort St. George. The gate just barely seen would have also been a good subject.
When you were in Australia, you were close to the Solomon Islands, from where I posted my lost few photos.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello Stephen,
a desolate but captivating sight, the window is the dominating element, its covered in several ways and looks mysterious. I like how you surrounded it with the emerging bricks, the pillars, the door and the ceiling. The pavement completes the description effectively and adds depth. Bright colours along with abandonment and decay make an intriguing combination. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
Ourania

Hello Stephen,
The colors and textures are the attraction of this photo. Thank you for the note on the history of this city. I wonder why the name was changed from Madras to Chennai.
