El Rompido Lighthouse, a photo from Huelva, Andalucia

Photographer's Note

The lighthouses are located in the municipality of Cartaya, on the tip of the same name on the left bank of the mouth of the Piedras River and near existing port facilities.

The old lighthouse was built on Angel Mayo's project in 1861 and came to mark the mouth of the Piedras River at the height where the Punta del Gato was on the date. With a truncated conical shape and a decagonal lantern that resembles the Mesa Rold疣 lighthouse (Almer僘) it has a height of 13 meters and a lighting range of 16 miles. From 1930 and due to the greater scope that the Mazag lighthouse is acquiring, it is losing importance, so its lighting is replaced by a permanent one of acetylene. 1976 stops working when the new headlight starts operating.

The construction of a new lighthouse is due to the fact that given the situation a lighthouse of greater height (31 meters) was needed to complete the navigation arch from Ayamonte to Huelva. Cylindrical and reinforced concrete, it is similar to the lighthouse at the entrance to the port of Huelva. Its reach is 24 miles.

Los faros se encuentran situados en el municipio de Cartaya, sobre la punta del mismo nombre en la margen izquierda de la desembocadura del r卲 Piedras y en cercan僘s de las instalaciones portuarias existentes.

El antiguo faro se construye sobre proyecto de ﾁngel Mayo en 1861 y venia a balizar la desembocadura del r卲 Piedras a la altura donde en la fecha se encontraba la Punta del Gato. De forma troncocica y linterna decagonal que le asemeja al faro de Mesa Rold疣 (Almer僘) tiene una altura de 13 metros y un alcance de iluminaci de 16 millas. A partir de 1930 y por el mayor alcance que va adquiriendo el faro de Mazag va perdiendo importancia por lo que se sustituye su alumbrado por uno permanente de acetileno. Deja de funcionar 1976 cuando empieza a operar el nuevo faro.

La construcci de un nuevo faro obedece a que dada la situaci se necesitaba un faro de mayor altura (31 metros ) que permitiera completar el arco de navegaci desde Ayamonte a Huelva. De forma cil匤drica y de hormig armado, es semejante al faro que se encuentra a la entrada del puerto de Huelva. Su alcance es de 24 millas.

Went to Google-Maps to find out about this town, and than was surprised to see the unusual shape of the Piedras river estuary. That would explain why I thought the two light-towers seem so far from the sea.
Learnt something new on TE today, besides seeing this place for the first time.

Luis, estos dos faros estan ubicados en el puerto de El Rompido. Se utilizan para selar la costa a los barcos que navegan en alta mar. Un fondo de roca protege las casas construidas muy cerca del agua en caso de tormentas. Hermosos colores, buen nitidez. Saludos cordiales.

Hello Luis,
It's interesting to see two lighthouses so close together and one rising so high above the other. There are few other landmarks in the area but the towers are enough. The main assets of the photo are the exceptionally fine colours and the pleasant light.

Excellent view of the town in a fine and pleasant sunlight and in front of a nice blue sky with some appealing clouds. The lighthouse is well placed in the centre, high above the much lower buildings of the town. Well captured.

Hola Luis,

We don't usually see lighthouses amongst other buildings; they are usually right at the edge of the sea, or on a high cliff, and here, we have two so this is quite unusual!
I like how you have composed the shot, with the quayside and the jetty leading us inwards to what are possibly bathing huts.
The two lighthouses competing for attention make strong focal points in a very well exposed scene.
