May 21: Glacier Bay National Park

Canadian Grand Pacific

Grand Pacific Glacier 25 miles (40 km) long and flows through British Columbia and Alaska. It begins in Glacier Bay National Park (U.S.A.) in the St. Elias Mountains, 7 miles (11.2 km) southwest of Mount Hay, trends east into the Grand Pacific Pass area of British Columbia, and then southeast to the head of Tarr Inlet. Back in the 1700s, Grand Pacific Glacier filled the entire bay, and reached all they way to the Icy Strait.

The border between the U. S. and Canada is very close to the terminus of Grand Pacific Glacier. The white area of the glacier is well into the Stikine Region in British Columbia. We were told the Grand Pacific looks very dirty because avalanches, rock slides, tributary glaciers and the scouring of the valley have caused an accumulation of dirt and rock. So, there is ice under all that rubble we see in front.

Hello Murat,
I wouldn't have realized that it's dirt covering the glacier in the nearest area unless I had read the note. Despite being just rubble and dirt that part makes a nice transition between the light blue sea and the predominantly white area stretching all the way to beyond the mountains. Among the workshops I especially like the Glacier Canadien, which could have been another main upload.

Shooting large snow-bed terrain, my advise to be as follows, Murat:
Change setting to spot metering, and raise one notch on the F-number dial.
This way you can avoid the overexposed white large part.
Anyway, a good scale from sea to sky with the glacier and mountain in the middle-height.

Hi Murat,
quite a difficult task to expose this well especially at the end of the zoom limit.
The white areas are getting out of control being so bright.
I had the same problem when being in mountains, I am still not sure how to balance it, jemaflor seems to know how to do it perfectly.
Nevertheless the effect is breath taking since the place is magical.
I would love to visit it someday.

we can see the amount of ice stores ahead that hill in dark hues. the blue of the water is typical of the areas with glaciers nearby. very beautiful.
