Photographer's Note

Taksim Square is certainly a place to see in Istanbul!

Yes, its a photo that every tourist grabs while visiting, but you wouldn't leave Paris without a photo of the Eiffel Tower now would you!

My favorite photos of Taksim and the red trams, are the ones taken in winter with all the snow coming down...but thats not going to happen as we were here in May. Oh well :)

There's alot of activity in this area, lots of shopping, lots of people watching. A fun place to be with your camera in hand.

I'll add a couple of WS photos too, one which is in HDR.

I like very much its life and for sure the old tram along Istiklal Street. This is a capture of the real life, I like too the tramp situation in order to compose the scene...

Hi Craig,
To my unaccustomed eyes, these trams seem somewhat incongruous in the view of the city, all the people walking around, not noticing that it appears a nostalgic version of doctor who's tardis has just appeared beside them. I guess that's because I am not too used to trams, the ones on Dublin for the most part do not share space with pedestrians like this. It makes a cool opportunity for a photo, especially the cheeky kids getting what I guess is a free journey. The red color really pops out of the scene to. Cool photos.

Good sense of motion rendered with the tram and street tumult, Craig.
The red tone stand out contrast, and two sides houses on the street added sense of depth. Fine #2 WS.

Hi Craig, Who wouldn't love this red tram. Of course I did too, do you remember this photo?. Now you saw it too. Nice photo of course, but a shame the buildings on the left are not so attractive here. Have you ride to ride by this tram? I would love but we were four (Deniz, Basak and my friend and me). And it is always very crowded. What memories :).

ho la sensazione di essere il solo che quando ha visitato Istambul (2 volte) non ha visto questo tram colorato che � famoso.
E' vero che a quel tempo invece di fare fotografie facevo filmati ma questo � un soggetto che manca nelle mie riprese.
Peccato.
Chiss� se un giorno torner� ad Istambul.
Di sicuro la prima cosa che andr� a cercare sar� questo tram bello e colorato:
P.S. i ragazzi appesi all'esterno fanno pensare alla Napoli del primo dopoguerra.

That tram is certainly a beauty with its red colour lovely shining in the sunlight and with its pretty wooden windows.
In this pedestrian street the tram is surrounded by people which makes the whole even more attractive.

A solid street shot. The antique tram is off centre on the thirds line, and its splash of red lifts the generally muted tones of the rest of the scene. The two lads hitching a free ride add that element of light-heartedness.

Usually a lady in red makes a perfect focal point for a photo. Here you used not just a lady in red but also a tram in red. Isn't that overdoing it a bit? ;-)
Still, regardless of colors it's most of all the boys that make this picture. They add the right pinch of human touch.

Hello dear Craig,

Very nice capture from Pera with this red tram. Good pov and light management.
I have used them in my childhood all over in İstanbul. It was a common transport system untill late sixties and then replaced by busses. Nowadays it's only a turistic attraction in Pera and another one is on the Asian part of İstanbul.

An interesting street scene with a very eye-catching red tram. The boys seem to enjoy some dangers in life, this used to be a popular sport in Gothenburg too, but everything that could be used as handles on the trams have been taken away... All the versions here are very good.

Trams are like trains, they seem to cast a spell over us when we see them ... we have to photograph them!
Well, a red one is even more of a treat!

This is a fine composition, capturing the mood of the busy street and the enviable recklessness of young boys! I see where you got your title from!

The Metro (tramway) is an important method of transport in Manchester, now. The trams are quick clean and efficient. When I visited the city last week, I noticed a large part of the centre was under development, to install a new Metro station.

Hi Craig,

I'm not sure how I missed this one - or, rather, these three lovely photographs.

Those old red tramcars really are a delight and you have made the very most of them in this trio of pictures. Pity about the lack of snow but there's not a heck of a lot you could have done about that.

All three are delightful compositions and, though I'm impressed by your HDR image, I think I prefer the other two actually. But all are perfectly and pleasingly composed and in each the red tram takes pride of place and, also in each, the inclusion of lots of interesting people adds to the appeal.

Again, lovely light and colours and exceptional technical quality.

Rat race & slice of urban street life and lots going on there, a bright cheerful and crisp look at an every day scene with a simple point of focus on the striking bold sparkling red of the retro olde worlde tram. Excellent capture flawlessly exposed. Congrats

P/S: your notes on my last upload is much appreciated; the greatest advantage is that when you are a LONER at any shooting locations without string attached, thus time is always on your side with proper plan to pick and choose the right subjects of interest. Early morning and late aft prime golden hours are of utmost important to me that i try not to miss.

Always attractive for me, are forms of transportation, and your candid view of the Taksim Square electric trolley does it.
This trolley appears narrow compared to many and probably been in service for many years. Then the people strolling along the high buildings lining the path.

Hello Craig,

I know this spot well. I used to walk up to the Shake Shack back towards Beyoglu and the Golden Horn then walk down the hill to Tophane and catch the tram back to Eminonu for my boat to Harem and another bus back to Izmit. The quaint red trams sets up a great warm cold color contrast against the blue sky. Good sharpness and the people animate the scene. Tfs!
