Photographer's Note

A late afternoon shot at Ban Nam Dee north of Luang Namtha. Admittedly a very lonely desolate location but I really enjoyed the setting of vast luxuriant green paddy fields, when I spotted a single soul working the field in the middle of nowhere and seemed that nothing was going to interrupt her even at late hour of the day. Indeed it's a backbreaking work as life does not look easy for her.

It was a wonderful serene place and it's also fascinating to observe how people going about their daily lives which is such a different environment to our own.

I wonder how nature offers so many different views and details for us to enjoy before the day ends..

This is not just a beautiful but also very well structured composition, nicely divided into several fields of different colours. The woman bending down is well placed in an area where she is clearly seen. The photo has a very pleasant atmosphere even though it shows a person involved in hard labour.

A lovely pattern of the the field, the light is making this scene so abundant in natural resources. Very well composed the entire composition of the image. Hard work shall be awarded by reasonable pay, here I guess the gap between rich and poor is an issue or just a way for being independent on your own. A great presentation, TFS.

For if .... hard work to cultivate these paddy fields, you got a picture of remarkable beauty, with those horizontal stripes, created by distintis plots, separated by these land elevations, the lady working puts the vital touch to the image.
Sharpness, lighting, color, POV chosen, and the magnificent composition; all factors are perfectly made, in this beautiful image.

Hello Abmdsudi,this scene could almost be an abstract with its stripes of colour and texture.
Just the woman working hard breaks the pattern, but in a good way; she puts the whole picture into context.

Beautiful and a lovely time to be in Laos at the beginning of the rainy season, you get to see more of the local farmers doing their daily work and their traditional way of life. I missed it. We were a little too early in April, but was nice to be there for the Laos New Year celebration. Excellent shot here with a true sense of daily life image of Laos, very nostalgic image for me.

This scene brings me back to when I was in grade school when we used to sing about life in the rice paddies, how hard life is always bending down to plant the crop but the song had a great ending. Awesome documentation of life in the rice field and I can almost smell the sweet aroma emitting from the plants. I like the tight cropping. Good lighting and sharp details. Well done, tfs.

A very pleasing shot of the rice paddy, with well placed worker. The several layers are all a bit different, but give the picture an attractive pattern. There's no sky, but plenty of light reflected in the water. Well composed and/or cropped. Nice work.

Dear Abmdsudi

I often say this, but we are born in prosperous, peaceful countries by sheer luck, an accident of birth. Not by good management or cultural superiority. Yet there are so many of us fortunate people in this world who are conditioned to blame the poor for their poverty or the afflicted for their affliction. It helps us to turn a blind eye and ignore the fact that our wealthy fortunate countries have exploited those less fortunate, of their resources, wealth and humanity. This disconnect stuns and saddens me, and makes me angry. I'm re-reading the Open Veins of America by Eduardo Galeano at the moment, and he puts the case so much more eloquently than I have. But I think you understand what I'm trying to say. So whilst I see the incredible beauty of your photo, I see so much more in its symbolism and note. The hall-marks of a successful photo, one that stays with us.

My heart goes out to this lady, working herself to death. Whilst the 1% grow richer and even more uncaring from her toils.

The technical beauty of this photo is beyond dispute. But the emotions it evokes are so much more important.

Classic, simple, Golden Mean composition. I sympathise with your comments about the backbreaking work: my back's often pretty painful, and bending double for hours at a time is about as bad as it gets. Poor soul. But excellent documentary shot, with artistic flair.

Yes Abmdsudi, it doe's look as a single soul working alone on the vast field, and yet, she has to bent constantly. What a job...lot's to learn here.
Her blue sari is in fine contrast to the green and sky reflection on water.
