Muiderslot

I am taking a break from my North American series, although there is one more city, that I will show from my recent trip. This photo, however, was taken two days ago, and much closer, some 10km, to my home. It shows het Muiderslot, where I attended an open-air performance of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. This photo was taken during the break, about half an hour before sunset.

Het Muiderslot is one of the, if not the, best-known castle(s) in The Netherlands. It is located in the town of Muiden, close to the mouth of the river Vecht, where it flows into what used to be the Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer).

It is uncertain when the castle was built, but it is often said Count Floris V built het Muiderslot around 1280. It was also here that Floris was murdered in 1296. A couple of centuries later, during the Dutch Golden Age, historian, poet and playwright P.C. Hooft lived in the castle and used it for his meetings with fellow scientists and writers, a group called de Muiderkring (the Muiden Circle). Het Muiderslot is a national museum nowadays and is internationally often branded as Amsterdam Castle in order to attract more tourists from abroad.

Hallo Lars,
Dit is wel 鳬n van de mooiste kastelen in Nederland, prachtig omgeven door een slotgracht.
Je nam de foto op een ideaal moment waarbij de rode steenkleur prachtig tot uiting komt met de blauwe lucht op de achtergrond.
Beide kleuren worden ook mooi weerspiegeld in het water.
Uitstekende presentatie vanuit een goede hoek.

Dag Lars,

Even op kastelen toer, door Jaap (caper, niet meer actief op TE) heb ik veel kastelen in Nederland leren kennen
Het Muiderslot is heel mooi en een bijzonder architectuur
De ingang met het brugje zijn ook heel mooi
Goed foto werk, bedankt

An imposing edifice, a fortification surrounded by water to give extra protection in old times, lars.
Taken just before sunset, as you wrote - that's why we can see the beautiful water reflected on the red bricks wall.

This is a very impressive castle and the view you have chosen along with the warm golden sunset light makes it look like something from an ancient legend. The building looks strong and imposing. I would not like to have to storm this place in an ancient time of war. Really great presentation of a very fine place

Helo Lars, the evening light with the setting sun has created a lovely glow on the brick walls and reflected on the small windows.
A good point of view taking in two faces of the castle.

The beautiful late evening light has illuminated this impossing castle in a wonderful light. The castle looks quite strong and impenetrable with its position in the middle of the small lake. I bet the open air performance in this setting must have been wonderful. I recently was at an opera performance in a castle like this.

Hallo Lars,

Wonderful reflections in the water with the multiple arched bridge at right providing a fine lead in line. Superb warm cold color contrasts between the blue sky and the sunlit yellow red walls of the old castle. Good sharpness and I like the angled pov showing 2 facades. Tfs.

I wonder how the man was murdered and under what circumstances?

excellent pov and angle to shoot it at, we get a hint of the reflections, and the colour combinations are attractive too.

Hello Lars,

I suspected immediately that this was a break from N.Y !!!

What an impressive castle, especially with the low sun reddening and patterning its walls and creating a fiery reflection in the moat! Although a normal approach would have been to use the bridge as a guide, you definitely took the right option, capturing the light effects!
It must have been a stunning setting for the play.
I have been to such outdoor performances which certainly add to the atmosphere. I suppose the real problem can be the weather!

This is a fantastic castle, like a child's dream of a fairytale come true. The setting sun has given one side a wonderful warm tone. Obviously you couldn't have found a better angle, at least not at that time of the day. The photo is excellently exposed and has a beautiful clarity.

Hi Lars,
lovely castle with charming unique architecture and you have captured it in a great light. Low light and so quite challenging but the outcome is fantastic. The subtly touched by the warm sunlight architecture looks great set against the blue sky here.

An impressive building and you have got a shot with beautiful light on it (the deeper red of the reflection in the water works particularly well). I am impressed how few people are in the frame given that this was shot during a public event - nice patience I would imagine.
