Photographer's Note
On 28 October, 2014 we boarded the Crystal Symphony for a two week repositioning cruise in the Pacific Ocean, sailing first from San Diego, California to Honolulu, Hawaii, and then from Honolulu to Auckland, NZ. Reaching Hawaii five days after leaving San Diego, the elegant ship remained in port for the next twenty-four hours. This gave us a chance to drive with Hawaiian friends to Waimea Beach on the North Shore, famous for its colossal waves and the culture of competitive surfing.
During December, Waimea Beach can become the site of waves 10-15 m (30-45 ft), beckoning competitive surfers from around the world. But that day in early November, it was serene and enormously disappointing for me. (I had bought along my Nikon D200, replete with a sharp 200mm lens and a tripod.) But it had to be even more disappointing to the surfers, there was no opportunity to get their adrenaline highs. But then, I spotted a handful of young locals, gathering on a nearby cliff top, to hurl their bodies into the Pacific Ocean about 15 m below. Most likely these were seasoned locals, completely at home with the elements. And no one, I would imagine, would have jumped off the cliff had the waves been cresting near the top of the cliff itself. To get a better idea of the setting, please take a look at the workshop.
A few days ago we received news from our Hawaiian friends that the 10-15 m waves are back whipped up by a typhoon that struck Japan, thousands of miles away... so are the competitive surfers and the bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Dear Bulent,
A big moment with the dump of the diver, divers take sometimes a great risk, but when we are young see we not the risks.
Also a nice contrast picture and excellent technical perfect picture.
Sharpness and clarity are pleasant to look at.

An ideal moment to capture this image. The intrepid young diver is perfectly set against the turquoise tones of the Pacific. Not a sport for the faint hearted!

Hello Blent,
I wouldn't dare a jump like that, but I appreciate that somebody did, so I could have the pleasure of watching this fine photo. It is a quite simple composition, which is a clear advantage, with a fine contrast between blue and almost black. The man hanging in the air and his friends on top of the rock are very clear and distinct features making the photo very eye-catching and appealing.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Bulent
Wow, this is some action shot! The sense of height is really awesome, and I love that the guy in mid air is upside down! You composed this brilliantly to capture the height of the rock, and all the people are perfectly placed. Cool shot!

Hello Bulent
Well framed at the peak moment, when the diver under the eyes of others bathers is completing the figure before diving in the sea.

I hope there's enough water so this diver won't hit any of those black rocks, and it looks like this man is very excited about the jump. Good action shot with sharp details. Well done, tfs.

Hi Bulent,
Quite a place to jump for these daredevils. Excellent action shot. Almost black basalt rock clearly reminds of vulcanic geaology of Hawaiian islands.

Hi Buletn, I think it is enough adrenaline to see these jumps. In fact, I avoid such places and spectacles that something can happen. The Acapulco is famous and I didn't go there. of course, the locals know everything about it, but I do not like to watch. This rock is really high. So you were disappointed that there were no high waves - did you want to surf???

İyi Akşamlar Blent Bey,
Although not on par with the performance of an olympic diver, this gentleman's dive is impressive; I do not think I would have attempted this, I would have been too afraid that I would not clear the lower rocks. The turquoise water is very inviting. Well seen and excellently framed.

Hello Bulent,
I love scenes like this, they have a captivating spontaneity and, apart from the special photographic interest they present and the challenges they impose, I think that they are also a celebration of life. The people who attempt and perform the dives trust their skills and their luck and respect each other's efforts. Spectators are a necessary component of the fun and I'm sure your subjects would love to see your photos. I love both of your pictures, you captured the dives with great sharpness, the textures of the cliff and the full blue backdrop are wonderful too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
Ourania

Merhaba Bulent. Great shot of these Polynesian "children"of sun and sea at home in their environment. Excellent timing. Let's go into the new year with maybe a little more reserve than shown in the photo, with a little less bravado and more care, especially in relations to our fellow man. I wish you a safe, healthy and prosperous 2015. Selam. Klaudio.

Hi Bulent,
I had the pleasure to visit Maui but other islands including Oahu are yet on my list :)
This courageous jump reminds me about a colleague from my current work. He is from Algeria and told me that jumps off the cliffs are quite popular where he lives and two members of his family died in this way.
Nevertheless the picture itself is very impressive, you caught the person in a nice pose.
Very well done,
M
