Ger in the Little Gobi Desert, a photo from South Hangay, West

Photographer's Note

A section of the 'little' Gobi Desert, known as "Elsen tasarkhai" sand dunes, can be seen in the background. You can even hire a camel, & pose for photos, if you wish! It had actually rained the night before, & was still overcast. The nomadic herders of Mongolia pitch their tents (which they call 'gers') wherever they can find a little grass for their livestock. Westerners usually call them yurts, but they are the wigwam shaped, tepee structures of the reindeer people further north on the Siberian border. Transport in these parts for the nomads, is on the back of a camel or yak, (when the grass disappears), to a new location. This particular ger camp had a motorbike to round up the wandering livestock.

Hello Chris,
There seems to be quite a lot of vegetation for a desert though I imagine these areas are few and far between. Good documentary image of this nomadic tent. Excellent colours and sharpness.

A picturesque place in the sense it is so far from the way we live!
The nomads of the desert have developed a particular lifestyle up through the years, that is adapted to what nature has to offer...

I am always fascinated by these gers and actually I have seen in a documentary the way the nomads were installing these tents...It is well positioned in the image and I like to see the mountains at a distance.

The Ger stands out against the surroundings, which seems quite desolate. Livestock and a motorbike to boot...not bad for a nomadic life! Unusually lushness in the green grass in the Fg, for a desert. Good work!

Hi Chris,

The point of view takes my eyes toward the mountains which is giving depth to the composition. It is also showing the details and colors of the structure of the tent. Different recipients are framing well the tent. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colors. Have a nice day.
