La Seu is the most emblematic monument of Mallorca, built on a promontory overlooking the sea wall and chairs the center of the harbor side of the old town of Palma de Mallorca. La Seu es el monumento m疽 emblem疸ico de Mallorca, levantada sobre un promontorio sobre la muralla y el mar, preside el centro de la vertiente mar�tima del casco antiguo de Palma de Mallorca. Es un tributo del hombre a su fe cristiana, expresado en la belleza y la magnificencia de un conjunto arquitect�nico, construido a lo largo de los siglos, en el interior la luz explota dentro de la oscuridad a trav駸 de sus vidrieras. En definitiva, es una obra de arte que no deja indiferente al que se acerca a contemplarla.

En el siglo XIII, Jaume I orden� la utilizaci�n de la antigua mezquita mayor, previamente purificada, como templo para el culto cristiano, dedicado a Santa Mar�a. En el mismo lugar donde se construir�a la Seu. La catedral de Mallorca est� relacionada con la conquista catalana y se pone de manifiesto la vinculaci�n pol�tica del monumento, que fue proyectado como templo para el culto cat�lico, a la vez que pante�n de los reyes de Mallorca y escenario de sus coronaciones. El edificio de la mezquita se utiliz� hasta el siglo XIV, del cual la Seu conserva su orientaci�n, mientras se hac�an las obras del nuevo templo. Cuando se lleg� a la altura del portal lateral, la mezquita fue derruida. En esta 駱oca se cambi� el plan de construcci�n, aumentando la altura del edificio, lo que explica una cierta desuni�n entre la cabecera y la nave del templo g�tico. En 1601 el edificio era terminado y consagrado, si bien desde entonces ha sufrido m�ltiples reformas, la �ltima fue dirigida por el arquitecto Antoni Gaud� entre los a�os 1904 y 1914.

La planta de la Seu es un gran rect疣gulo, con un 疵ea aproximada de 6.600 metros cuadrados y una capacidad para acoger a 18.000 personas, dividido en tres naves de ocho tramos, m疽 una cabecera que contiene un 畸side por cada nave. El 畸side central tiene una capilla alta, la de la Trinitat donde se encuentran los sepulcros de los reyes de Mallorca Jaume II y Jaume III, y el presbiterio, tambi駭 llamada Capilla Real donde est� el altar mayor, sobre el cual cuelga el baldaqu�n realizado por Antoni Gaud�. Los tramos laterales, entre contrafuertes, son ocupados por diecis駟s capillas.
