Photographer's Note
I admit this is an experiment only and as such probably shouldn稚 be posted!
That is why this time I don稚 expect a general critique, but simply put forward a question: Do you think the sharpness and noise issues are so serious this image should remain in the files?
And the experiment?
I was simply testing the capabilities of the Image Stabilizer (VR). I was pushing the test as far as I could, with full zoom (and an exposure time of 1/2.5 sec in the first WS image), all hand held of course.
Please see the full tech info for this image below. You may notice the noise that appears in spite of ISO 200, but I found that noise reduction (NeatImage) also created a disturbing halo like effect around the trees so personally I prefer the unfiltered version.
NO POINTS PLEASE, just give me your honest opinion of the tech quality, noise and sharpness related issues in particular!

Some of you may have noticed how clever I am, giving both (all three) images song titles? Hehehe, but then there must be a million songs about the moon

hello Pablo,
I see no particular problem with the sharpness, but at least on this screen there seems to be quite some noise in the sky.
but I do like the overall feeling of the scene. quite scary actually, the bright moon makes me think about warewoolfs, and the red lights among the trees looks like fires of hell :) the steel gray of the sky certainly adds to the mood. SCARY! :)

Hello Pablo
Even with 200mm zoom, I would never be able to get the moon so big in my country! Nice experiment & I laud you for throwing it up for discussion. There's some sharpness issue especially when we see the fringes of the moon, a bit towards oversharpening (something I've never seen in your posts). Also there seems to be quite a bit of noise in the sky & I agree with the NI issue that your mentioned. Have you tried another Noise reduction software called Helicon...you can download it & see. I use it quite a lot nowadays. The WS image is scary...but I prefer the moon here!

Hello Pablo,
I am in favour of posting it, as wisely buin says in his intro, when the content or subject of the photo is good one shouldn't mind minor tecnical faults. Te is not a Photograpy contest, and I think the esthetical qualities of the photo justify its posting. Sharpness is not the best but in my opinion pretty acceptable and I agree with you about the noise. I have the same problem in many of my photos, and my italian friends always reproach me for that, but I'm not satisfied with the result you get sometime with neatimage, a lack of sharpness and a weird look of clouds and sea. So I prefer to post it with the noise and bear the harsh criticism of my friends!
To have a moon such as that is gratifying enough.
All the best,
Donato

Ol Pablo, I'm going with the flow ignoring your request of NO POINTS PLEASE ;-) as I think that experiments should be encourage in photography and posted in TE. And besides this is a great shot with an impressive result. I say this, because I tried exactely the same a month ago (with my new camera) and I think I didn't get such a good image as you have here. I like the way is here. Personally I don't like NeatImage and the grain doen't bother me at all. Saying all this, congratulations for the experiment :)

Hi Pablo,
I am not respecting your request to not giving points because I think it deserves them. You may call it just an experiment, but I find it a beautiful photo, well achieved technique and aesthetics wise. Ok, it's "just" a silhouette of a forest with a big moon at the blue hour, but it is equally "just" very beautiful.
I have never used VR, so maybe I am saying something silly, but I don't find that the subject is a very good one to test VR, as the subdued light doesn't allow much detail anyway and I wouldn't expect much blur using 1/320. However, the sharpness of the Blue Moon is amazing for 200mm and 1/20. On that WS is also remarkable the low noise level.
For the sake of discussing the issues related with noise reduction, I think that you should have posted WS's with your experiments with noise reduction. I am posting one WS in which I applied noise reduction and Gaussian blur to the sky, but I am not sure which version I prefer; I guess it is another good/bad example of how noise reduction often is more of replacing grainy noise with "smooth noise" and although sometimes it can be less perceived as a flaw, more often than not, it produces a non natural appearance. I rarely apply noise reduction to anything else other than sky or relatively large flat areas, as I prefer to see the grain than the loss of sharpness, exaggerated smoothness and "oil canvas" appearance that often results from noise reduction.
Regards, Jos.

Hei Pablo,
Even if it might be an experiment it is an excellent photo and the shortcomings you describe is nothing you really notice. The picture is really well-composed and the moon correctly exposed and in fact you should use a short exposure time to avoid overexposure of the moon. I would say that this is really good photo work where you make use of the possibilities of your camera. TFS and have a nice weekend!

Hi Pablo
The moon looks a bit shaky but you could fix this by using a selection the size of the moon minus a pixel or 2 and erase the blurry part.
I have a flat screen and the noise is not obvious so in my book no need to keep this in mothballs, and you deserve pats on the back for trying it.

Hi Pablo. There痴 a coincidence, I was out photographing the moon last night. Apparently it appears at its largest for some time. The noise at this image size is not too objectionable, I guess at higher magnifications it could intrude. Same goes for sharpness. Though the VR has done a great job at 1/2.5 secs. Hope this helps.
Have a good week, Paul.

Since it is an experiment that has given a good graphical result, beside composing a very beautiful image.
The zoom to 300mm has not vibrated, the image stabilizer works well, and I believe that the level of noise is slightly valuable.

To be completely honest I prefer this photograph with that which you propose in WS. Being very new in world NIKON, I appreciate also much this system VR. In addition to the noise that I do not find too awkward and who was indeed eliminated by our friend Jose, I like much clearness on the moon. The composition is well balanced. Hi Pablo,
You know I'm a big fan of moon photos and this is outstanding!! The detail of the moon is so sharp it appears 3 dimensional. I'm curious, do you have any idea why there is noise when the detail of the moon is so sharp? I almost think that the noise is making the the 3 dimensional effect in the moon.
I also really like the composition with not-quite-full moon just rising over the curving line of the tree-tops.

Hi Pablo,
The moon was so beautiful the last week that it was a challenge for all kinds of photographers.
Personally I seldom or never use noise reducing programs. I actually like the noise in this kind of pictures. It gives the picture a special atmosphere that well suits the dark circumstances.
Neatimage not only creates a disturbing halo, but, in my opinion, smoothes the texture of surfaces of the picture too much.
I think this experiment is certainly 2 points worth, but being a obedient TE-member I will obey your plea.

Hello Pablo,
this is a very beautiful and impressive BIG Moon! and a very good composition.
I have also looked at the other WS photos, and I find them very interesting, too.
Concerning the noise and sharpness, I never care too much about them unless they really spoil the whole photo and the impression (very rare occasions, though!) That's why I apply the "noise and sharpness filters" to my photos, when preparing them for posting, very carefully.
In this case, IMHO, it is the Moon itself, the composition and the colours that matter much more than the noise.
Whenever possible, I prefer the "unedited" versions!
:-)
By the way, I never use NeatImage. I tried it but I didn't like it. I always use Photoshop (CS4, in my case).
Best regards,
Elena
PS. I don't know the song which you mentioned - for this photo - but I think the title matches the photo very well :)

Hi Pablo,
I really don't find it that noisy, it has some noise in the blue area, but nothing too disturbing. Very good try and excellent composition. The moon is show in its full beauty.

Flavia

Hello Pablo,
A minimalist composition, less is more, but so powerful and beuatiful visually. I have not seen any other more sucessful shot of the moon yet here on TE. The treeline give a good balance and to enhanced the composition and emphasize the size of the moon. Noise level is a little high, but that is due to the low light and higher ISO. Perhaps a little bit over sharpening, the edge around the moon is very rough and harsh. Other than that a really successful shot. I really enjoy it. Excellent work. As you wish, no point. Thanks for the beautiful moon.

Hi Pablo
And there is the cheese, no it's the moon, but sometimes we say the moon is a cheese or more precisely an Edam cheese. The problem is, you cannot eat it. Excellent composition the keep the moon at left above the silhouettes of the forest. Congrats, that is a master stroke. Thanks for your critique of my shot from SAinoi.
Best regards
Urs
