The dentist, a photo from Khulna, South

Photographer's Note

This morning I was at the dentist here in Vlaardingen and whilst laying in the chair, had to think of the travelling tandarts in Bangladesh. Every day he visits a different village or small town, every day he has a queue of patients waiting for his service. Mostly extractions, carried out on the street, without anesthesia, without privacy.
It made me appreciate my dentist.

This is a fantastic street shot, so I have to add it to my favourites even though it shows a rather terrible moment. It reminds me of when I had pain in a sensitive part of my body while in Madras, India. Seeing the crowd surrounding the doctor in the city hospital I turned away, in spite of my pain.

I have an appointment booked for tomorrow, so I have the same understanding expressed by you in your notes!
It's a very good, close-cropped scene, detailing the dentist at work and all the other patients, empathetically waiting for their turn!
The photograph captures such emotion!

Hello Elaine,
A travelling dentist is a good solution for those who live more remote or in a place where there are few medical facilities.
But I wouldn't like a crowd of people besides the dentist, also peering into my mouth.
However, I fear that the equipment of the travelling dentist is rather limited and what about the disinfection possibilities of what was already used. This is, of course, viewed through a western lens...
Excellent interesting shot of the daily life in Bangladesh.

Wow, I'm jealous! That's a superb quality bl/w picture, Elaine. Wonderful framing, spontaneous yet carefully composed. The open mouth in the middle, the painful center of things...and then all those wonderfully expressive faces surrounding it.

I enjoy very much your photos from Bangladesh. This daily life scene of the street dentist working with patient tooth is excellent. They are surrounded by next patients or just strangers. Each person has special expression on his face.

a marvelous image, a masterpiece. each expression has a exceptional value here, the fear , the curiosity, the man watching you, the dentist. here in brazil poor people ever had lost teeth because abundance of sugar. I presume in bangladesh they are not so sweet fans as we.
