Harake or fulfilling a vow, a photo from Karnataka, South

Photographer's Note

Hindus are great believers in God and when misfortunes befall , they take vows that when their wishes are fulfilled they will go to the temple and perform certain rituals that they have promised to God. It could be anything from illness to getting married or financial troubles etc. Here a lady took a vow to climb all the 300 steps to the temple on the hill coating each step with Kumkum(red powder) and Turmeric(yellow) powder. The kumkum stands for our emotions or inner wisdom and the turmeric powder stands for our inner purity and on the negative side, for our inner pride and egoism.

Hello Lakshmi,

The image depicts very well the making of the woman's vow with the colored bags of powder. Her colorful sari adds to the composition. The little boy adds movement in her environment.

An engaging, but all too brief, essay highlights this photograph. You had an ideal vantage point to show the devout woman and child making their way up the steps. The colors and resolution are excellent.

I am a practicing Catholic believer.
The "meaning" of the transcendent is in man.
Beautiful note, the "gifts" c are spices and worldwide restaurants with Indian cuisine famous.

Lovely photo of another Indian tradition I didn't know of.

I like the way you captured the lady totally absorbed in her religious ritual. As for the cheerful colours of her sari and flower garland, they make a great contrast with her jetblack hair.
