Photographer's Note

The world痴 biggest snake boat race takes place in the scenic backwaters of alleppey, Kerala. What originated long ago as a Naval Warfare in South India has now evolved into an international cultural sporting event. The 100-120 feet long canoes made of a forest wood locally called "Aanjili thadi" carrying 90- 110 rowers which move like a snake through the channels (hence the name), is an eye catching sight. Hundred odd pairs of ebony shoulders rip the placid surface of backwaters while they propel their snake boats with pure muscle power. War cries of the navigators and oarsmen invigorated by traditional music of more than a dozen musicians gives an adrenaline rush even to spectators on the banks. Excitement thus generated shatters the trademark tranquillity of the backwaters as thousands of spectators roar with the oarsmen while cheering for their favourite boats.
