Photographer's Note
This picture was taken in the streets of Jodhpur far away from our comfortable world and It was an eye opener to say the least. I was very much taken by what I saw, a very disturbing social issue and touching illustration of imbalance of wealth and ideology. Couldn't help but notice this street kid sleeping by the road side, an almost statue like quality, in a broad daylight along the main thoroughfare.
This illustrates the complexity and contradictions I experienced in this country, which is just full of juxtapositions. I wanted to express the hard fact about street children and the duality of this image of two very opposite subjects; tension between the posters' symbol of glamour & wealth and the stark reality of poverty & homelessness and the play on the title. Just a simple street photography; grab-it-as-you-can sort of thing as it happened before my eyes. Of course the local were very furious for taking this shot but they didn't attempt to stop me, or followed me, just shouting which I dealt with calmly.
I strongly believe that every child has a dream.....
even this street kid! Maybe it touches you
and maybe it doesn稚.
I guess sometimes a photograph isn't pretty or happy it just says what it says and this is one of those.
no more words needed......

This shot shows one of the brutally hard facts about the world we live in Abmdsudi; the huge disparity of living standards between the rich and poor. I think that the relentless march of capitalism and obscene salaries earned by some sees that the gap get ever wider.
You are probably right, every child does dream but do you know how many of these children dream of getting their next fix of glue to escape the reality of their lives? or how many are happy to be pimped out in the hope of earning some food.
Your shot and excellent note make me feel very uncomfortable - so well done. We need not only to see but also to act in the face of circumstances like this.
Bravo!

Hello,
it is beautiful picture but also very touching. The message it carries is truly sad. The little boy sleeping lonely on the street on some pile of rugs makes me think how unfair the life can be.
The posters behind him create mocking background contrasting real difficult life with the colorful dream of Bollywood.
Excellent quality photo.
Thanks for sharing

Hello Abmdsudi
This is a serious documentary photograph, as your note implies. It's important on a site such as TE to offer imagery which reflects the reality of the places visited, and not simply postcard-pretty shots. This is documentary photography of a high order; but I'm somewhat surprised that you encountered such a level of anger when shooting. Maybe they were the Culture Police! Glad you got away with it.

Hello Abmdsudi,
This is a touching, hurting and very telling photo. Although it's an excellent composition it is very far from the beautiful views that dominate TE. I like this kind of capture of reality a lot better. It combines two aspects of modern India in a way so straightforward and realistic that it really hurts. In a way I could understand that bystanders were upset, but probably they were mainly embarrassed by the exposure of the reality of their country. Actually it makes me too a bit embarrassed that I enjoy the beauty of this composition, the colours of the posters, the pattern of the rough wall and the torn pieces of old posters.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Abmdsudi,
A splendid written note, with which I strongly agree that serves as an introduction to the envisioned this fantastic photo report, which expresses a sad reality in many parts of the world. The image certainly grieves for the insensitivity of the world, certainly the posters advertised fund other side of the world.
The colors and brightness are superb.
Good sharpness allows us to recreate the details.
Well done.
Enjoy the weekend.
Best wishes.

Cioa Abmdsudi
Ciao e buona domenica

Hi Abmdsudi,
Yes, this is a touching photo. I also agree that photography should not always be pretty and beautiful but should show the world as it is, and sadly that world is often unfair and ugly. I think the way the child is lying is very telling, it seems that he is trying to sleep while protecting his possessions. In the background the images advertising the glitz and glamour of the stage for those who can afford to see it is stark.
I would be of the same opinion as you too, and I do like to capture and ponder moments like this. Unfortunately, I generally do not have the courage to attempt as more often than not people in these situations are not happy to be photographed. Here in Ireland, poverty has increased dramatically. On the outside looking in, there are mansions of the wealthy everywhere and the roads are decked with Mercedes and BMWs, but look closer at the doorways in early morning and you will find those who have nothing and who sleep in the rain. It touched me last year in particular as one night I had to attend a work event in a vastly overpriced restaurant in the city. As I stepped out after the meal, I passed by many people sleeping in the rain on the way back to my car. It seemed so unfair. I had just eaten a stupidly expensive meal and these people considered themselves lucky to find a dry doorway to lie in. Our governments policies in recent years has meant that these people were until quite recently working, just like me. Living at home, just like me. As they say, there but for the grace of God go I.
But then, during the day these people are moved on by the police so as not to be an ugly sight for the wealthy business people and tourists. What can you say to that?
I agree, no more words nessecary.
Thanks as always for a thought provoking image.

Hello Abmdsudi,
the calmness and the juxtaposition in this picture are striking. The scene we're watching is so simple and silent but it's actually shouting into the viewer's mind. There's a stunning contrast between the colours and situations in the two different worlds depicted here. I wish the wide view was the lie but can't pretend not to see that miserable living conditions are spreading all over the world. You did very well to raise awareness in your own special way. Congratulations for your courage and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely week,
Ourania

Dobro vece.
Interesantan i dobar tekst o mestu i trenutku ...
Dobar tenutak snimka, ostrina i kontrast, lepo pokazano mesto sa detetom koje spava, lepe boje.
Lepo ulovljen trenutak, umor ne bira mesto za odmor.
Prijatno vece i sve najbolje.
Paja.
Good evening.
Interesting and good article about the place and time ...
Good time recording, sharpness and contrast nicely demonstrated place with a child who is sleeping, beautiful colors.
Beautifully captured moments, fatigue does not choose a place to rest.
Good evening and all the best.

Hello Abmdsudi,
This is important social documentary contribution to TE. The contrast, as you point out, between the street child and the posters is poignant. I doubt that this child has the chance to realise his dreams - life can be so unfair. A very well handled and touching image - TFS.

Hello Abmdsudi - just checking in after a long absence from TE. A really touching and important photo here; the juxtaposition between the boy and the glamorous posters behind him really works well to underline your message. India is a country in rapid change, and sadly children like this one are often the victims of it. Photos like yours, though, can help open eyes, which is something at least. Thanks, and I hope you've been well.

Hi Abmdsudi
well, what can i say? its one of those photos which sometimes less words actually reveal more.
interesting to know the local people gave you a hard time for taking the photo...makes me wonder if any of them were related to the boy and they were watching out for him?
and just as you mentioned, the total contrast between the smiling actors and the real-life scenario on the street - just look at the boys legs and feet!!!
sadly though, this happens in almost every area of the world.
As a photograph, its powerful and thought provoking, signs of a fantastic image.
cheers

Hi Abmdsudi,
You're capturing well this real world by a good composition, a good contrast and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive to see the spectacle that a little boy is sleeping on the road, although I'm hard to see it. Surely, it's opposite to showy poster of backdrop. I sometimes know the spectacle of poor working children at poor area in the world through photograph or document. Actually, even if religion and the government can improve environment, a life cannot be saved. Although it looks like that it is hard, a way only has creeping up by oneself. Parents without economic power cannot bear a child easily and cannot bring up a child in many cases. Such a child's tragedy will not be lost unless this vicious circle is lost.
Kind regards,
mikio

Salam Abmdsudi
This image does not surprise me at all & in fact can be taken in any country...homelessness & poverty is there in all countries, however developed they may be...its only the question of how much deep it is.
In India, the root of many problem is the population & as long this continues its growing trend, the problems will keep on increasing so will the gap between haves and have nots.
What I am really surprised is when you mention that locals shouted at you while taking the shot! Actually this is the first time I am hearing such a thing since, as I said before such a 'picture of contrast' is an everyday scenario in India as is the fact of tourists taking such pictures (for what I wonder, but...)
Nice work with the DL...the Indian way of it
Best Regards

Sabaidee Abmdsudi,
A very compelling and heart breaking image. As traveler, it is hard to know what to do than to feel bad and then there is so much you can do. I had kids running after me begging for money and after a few you gave, there is not much more we can do. the only hope is that the government can somehow help....
an excellent photo that speak so loud about society problem.

Hi Abmdsudi!
Great shot, not just because of the sad scene, but also because of the contrast with the dream world of the cinema that we see on the wall. Unfortunately, these contrasts are becoming more and more a reality, and not just in India! A great capture of the real world that makes us think for a while.
