Photographer's Note
While the outfits of these two gentlemen look traditional in the most idyllic kind of way I致e known for quite a long time that, more often than not, they are worn not for ritual purposes but to facilitate the process of extracting money from tourists. I知 not trying to say that痴 wrong, since when is it not allowed to charge money for posing for photos? Also, the amounts in question are not worth worrying about. I paid a 100 rupee to each of these 杜odels, the equivalent of 2.5 dollars in total.
But at least I thought those people were locals, trying to tap into the stream of money flowing from the tourism industry. But it痴 not always so. A few hours after this photo was taken I was sitting on the steps of one of the Varanasi ghats, reading my guidebook and generally minding my own business, when a man dressed in a similar fashion sat next to me and we started talking. Or rather he started talking and it soon became apparent that he was hoping for me to buy the service he was offering, which happened to be fortune telling. Apparently, it cost only 300 rupees and was great fun. But I was enjoying the then present moment and was not in the mood to talk about the future. He didn稚 insist but, instead of walking off in search of more willing clientele, he told me his story. He lived in Switzerland! Yes, in one of the richest countries of the Western Europe.
So what was he doing there, by the Ganges, dressed as if for the Kumbh Mela festival? The answer was in fact very simple and not as romantic as you might expect. He didn稚 like Swiss winters, so he spent the coldest months of the year in a much warmer country. While back at home, I suspect, his dole was being paid into his bank account, he was also earning a few bob 努orking abroad.
At least I didn稚 feel bad that by refusing I deprived him of his livelihood. He did not really need my money, just like I didn稚 need his fortune telling.
But this is not the titular funniest con. To find out about that you need to keep reading.
In the last two posts I described my early morning boat trip along the Ganges. It was booked via my hostel and cost 300 rupees (plus a small tip for the boatman). I loved every moment of it but took few good photos in the low light of the early morning so was hoping to do it again in the early afternoon. While the price was good, I expected I would be able to find even better offers from people who were not sharing their earnings with a tourist establishment. But it turned out that everyone quoted 400 rupees. I was intrigued and decided I壇 keep asking around. It was then when I stumbled upon an elderly, miserable-looking man. He was clearly frail and malnourished, so when he offered me a boat ride I felt I really should accept it. He quoted well over what I had already found out to be the 杜arket price but when I pointed that out, he lowered it to 500 rupees. Considering his age and obvious poverty I thought I should not haggle any further. Especially that he kept mentioning how difficult he found rowing at his age and how his boss would grab the lion痴 share of his earnings. He said that, to ensure he, not just his boss, gets paid, I should give him a tip (I quote: 殿ny amount of your choice as long as it痴 at least 2 dollars). Then, in the boat, he asked me to hand over the tip far away from the place where he had picked me up me so the boss couldn稚 see me give him money because he would then demand a share. It all looked very genuine and I gave him 2 dollars.
He didn稚 even touch the paddles. We floated with the current for a mile or two. I was hoping we would go back at the same pace so I could take more photos. But, instead of rowing, my boatman attached a line to someone else痴 motorboat and off we went, at high speed, back to the pier where I had met him. It was quite an expensive and fairly short ride but I still felt sorry for him and kept thinking of that awful boat owner that exploited his labour (he didn稚 exactly do any rowing, but he spent his time taking tourists up and down the river).
When I got off the boat, I asked about his name. "Kanhayi", he answered, "Just like on that sign". And he pointed at a sign on a new, richly decorated boat, not like the old one he offered me the trip in. The sign said: "Kanhayi Boat". It was then that I realised he not only owned the boat but he had a prospering business with more than one vessel and maybe even employed (and exploited) other locals. Seeing the look on my face, he realised his faux pas and tried to mitigate it by saying: "It's my boss's name too".
Of course. It was his boss's name as he was his own boss!
I found that incredibly funny. Worth paying a few extra dollars for.
In WS you can see Kanhayi's other boat and a photo of yet another boat and boatman. I was planning to post Kanhayi's story in WS but it was apparently too long.

Hello Kasia,
For sure a very colourful main picture here.
Did these men call themselves sadhu? Or does that have nothing to do with it?
Near the temple of Pashupatinath in Kathmandu I also saw a lot of these colourfully dressed and painted men. They claimed to be sadhus but according to other Nepalese people I met in the temple there are real and fake sadhus...
One I met asked 50 $ for a picture. I just smiled and left.
Funny story about that guy who lived in Switserland.
Another day in Nepal a taxi driver offered me a tour of several places. His asking price was not too high and I decided to travel around the easy way. Just for once.
During the trip he asked me where I came from and then he said he had visited Belgium. I thought it was a joke to appear more sympathetic. In some places, the locals learn a few things about a foreign country from which tourists come and thus they gain trust.
But he knew quite a bit about Belgium and then he decided to show pictures.
So he took his smartphone and showed me pictures of places in Europe where he had been. I recognized different places in Belgium where he and his wife posed in front of well-known buildings and monuments. He had similar pictures of other European countries.
It seemed unlikely that all those photos would have been faked. Moreover, he was able to tell something about all those places that was correct as far as I could check.
So there I was sitting in a Nepalese taxi with a Nepali who drove me around at the fare of a third world country while he had been as a tourist to so many places in Europe.
In the evening I told my hotel boss (a budget hotel) that I had met a taxi driver who had been to Belgium, whereupon that man said that he was going on a trip to Rome soon ...
How could these people afford that given what an overnight stay in a budget hotel and a taxi ride in an old car cost?
Some of the secrets of South Asia...
In that sense, those were my only two experiences.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao Kasia,as usual your adventures are an essential part of the post, and they are always very interesting .. in fact these two were too beautiful and in perfect pose to look just simple locals, and as I read you had to pay a little something to photograph them, happy for them and happy you, but it's a common thing all over the world. Quality post as always, with the two photos of the boats in the WS with excellent quality and perspective. Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Hi Kasia,
You have captured well the smiling expression of the men. The point of view is showing the details of the ir clothings and of their physionomy. The light is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.

Hello Kasia,
Fake or real doesn't really matter as long as these men provided you with a very colourful and eye-catching photo. As usual it's a perfectly sharp and perfectly exposed photo, and - as has happened before - your note is almost more interesting than the photo. (You should have been a journalist instead of an accountant, but I think I've said that before, and I know the reason of your choice.)
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Kasia
Amazing characters of these 'imitation spiritual men' and tx to your in depth narratives. I love the framing off-centre with wonderful orange colours that contrast quite well with the background, well exposed and sharp where it counts. Well done

Hello Kasia,
Well, I've had my Sunday afternoon's entertainment!
Is everyone out to make money by subterfuge! (I remember a kind assistant at a museum in Lahore, after explaining the importance of the exhibits to me, then went on to ask where I was staying and if I was married, or if I had an unmarried daughter! He wasn't even employed at the museum but just latching on to western ladies!!!)
I think your main photograph is excellent! The colours and the clarity of the shot make it stand out! I am sure I would have paid for a photograph, even if I knew they were not exactly who they pretended to be!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

No i Twoje notki zniechecaja ha ha
Swietne kolorowe stroje!
Ciekawe ze w Krakowie na rynku nikt nie pozuje w strojach goralskich z turystami... Moze na emeryturze tak sobie bede dorabial...
Pozdrawiam serdecznie,
M

Hello Kasia.
At first glance I thought that these two characters had some kind of position in a temple, after reading your note in a more traditional way they try to get money, the same thing we see in our European cities with people dressed in the most varied, but the photo is excellent and colorful.
Optimal light and sharpness.
A good job. I like.
Have a great day. Very best regards.
Luis.
