Photographer's Note

Mt. Usu in the Lake Toya region of Hokkaido last erupted in 1977 and in 2000. The later eruption caused 13,000 residents to be evacuated and created another peak in Mt. Usu. Here is the hotel and road that was part of an Onsen town which now has become a small lake after the 2000 eruption. At the end of the road you can see the steam bellowing out of the crater.

The residents of the area could not return because everything was flatten by the eruption but the site has become a tourist attraction. I don't know what was worse; seeing the devastation of the eruption or tasting the Wasabe ice=cream that was sold at the site.

This is another volcano on my to visit again and again list...
