This photograph was taken near Haijima Station in Akishima under Tokyo. This circumference is a quiet place which has a mountain in the circumference and through which Tama River flows. After I walked along the circumference in Yokota Air Base, I returned to the station and was walking on that day. Although residential land development is progressing this whole place, the image of Musashino remains and a copse is the place of rich nature which continues for a long time. Tamagawa Aqueduct(Tamagawa Jōsui) of this photograph is a waterworks which supplied drinking water to an Edo in the city once. It takes the water from Tama River in the Hamura diversion weir, and was distributed to in the city through the "water guard house" attached Yotsuya after flowing to east in Musashino Plateau. About 43 km in full length was opencut mining altogether. And, a large-scale flood-control channel also chooses the watershed of the river in Musashino Plateau and it is being underlined with it. By new reclamation of a rice field in 1722 and afterwards, many irrigation canal was excavated, water was supplied also to the farmland in Musashino, and it greatly contributed also to agricultural output. This is an inheritance of the valuable engineering-works irrigation technology which predecessors left at the Edo period.
