Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken in the shopping center near my house. When I walked along the narrow passage and there is the general dealer on right-hand side. Although it is an old store, the depth is large, and daily necessaries required for a life are assembled. When I saw in front of the store, the goods which tell arrival of summer were hanging down. One is a straw hat and another is the watering can. The straw hat seems to kind to eyes for its material, wide bill of the hat and a simple hat band. And, a watering can will call cool if it is scattered on the road which solidified in heat or is poured into a flowerpot. The rainy season finished and a hot summer came on this year also.

Hi dear Mikio. I do like this simple yet meaningful photo. You chose the right objects to convey the heat that you expect and also to convey the love of the Japanese people for the outdoors and for plants and flowers. Obviously the watering can is used by the urban person for his or her pot plants or the select shrubs and small trees growing in the small front garden. Would many people have enough space in Tokyo or Kita-ku to grow some vegetables? Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Mikio,
Another well-composed, exquisitely framed photo. I love the selective focus. Every time I see a blurry background against a well-focused subject, my heart melts. I wonder if a forced fill-in flash would have helped the tiny washed-out areas of the straw hats.
As for your comment on American churches, Americans tend to build most of their buildings almost exclusively out of wood. In Europe, we tend to use brick and mortar.

This is a very nice and also eye-catching composition with the green watering cans and the straw hats displayed next to the glimpse of the street. It's a simple picture in a way, but it gets a strong significance through your note about things needed during the hot summer.
