Photographer's Note
In those years a trip to Nikko took a long time, and a visitor should consider at least the whole day, I remember I had to change a train at Utsinomiya, and the weather was rainy on that day. Nevertheless I decided to go on and hope for the best. Today with digitals it is much easier to take pictures in dark places, but in 1957 with a 100 ASA film a photographer risked some blur.
But finally I was in NIKKO and I had reached THE place I wished to visit so much. The gold seemed ever more brilliant when wet. The visitors were mostly japanese groups, today such a sight with hats so popular in the 50's would be unthinkable.
This picture is perhaps a prelude of what I would be trying to do 50 years later, combining visitors and art in Museums.

Merhaba izzet
Wow! I was 1 year old, when this was taken! A superb historic record, of life in Nikko, Japan, just 12 years after the end of WW2. Good sharpness & repetition of the umbrellas. Tfs!

Merhaba Izzet,
This image with the ain in bl/w on those men in suits inmediately reminded me of those great Japanese pictures of the fifties.
Then I saw to my surprise that the picture was in fact taken in fifties! I wonder if this is the oldest shot on TE?
Thanks for this very interesting post. I love the way the umbrella's divide the picture.

Hello Izzet,
This is another gem!! The group of people in the foreground, with their fifties-style clothes and hats is great, and then we have the traditional Japanese shapes and symbols behind them. There are so many interesting details to enjoy in this photo!

Hello Izzet Bey,
Taken in 1957 and still sooo beautiful. The composition is superb, textbook, of the kind you have written. The men with the umbrellas in the foreground and your use of the background is absolutely wonderful.
Best personal regards. Salvator.

Hi Izzet.
This is a wonderful document, historical photohournalism. This not only has an historical value, but the quality of the image is something digiatl cannot replicate yet, of ever. The POV is outstanding and the sense of expression is beguiling. I saw one of these vintage Leica 111's on ebay for about $200, maybe I will try it out.

Justin

hello izzet,
I saw this picture only a few days ago and it made a deep impression on me - the year it was taken, with a Leica, on b/w film, those people looking at you, a far, far away country... it has a very special feel and it represents a kind of photography that I love above all other kinds.
you have an impressive gallery that I am almost ashamed to say I have discovered only now.
