Photographer's Note

This sluice is a sluice installed in the terminal area of Tsukishima River and Sumida River in 1964, and is a roller gate type with a width of 11 meters. A sluice is a structure prepared in a river, a canal, a reservoir, etc. The flow and quantity of water are controlled by partition (gate) of working, and it has a function as a bank at the time of a flood. Tsukishima River is about 500m river which connects the Asashio canal to Sumida River, and many houseboats (Yakatabune) were at anchor. Although the sluice is modest as an architecture, it has the important duty as one of the social infrastructures, such as planned distributary, water level operation and prevention from a flood of the river by high tide. This photograph is taken toward Tsukishima on the opposite shore from the bank of Sumida River in Tsukiji side. Many housing apartments are built behind the sluice.
